My art functions on two levels. The first is a psychological or metaphorical level where ideas, techniques and materials work together to connect and make meaning in my life. The second level is the aesthetic, do I like the way it looks. These two levels allow me to communicate through my art to a huge variety of people. When someone wants to really know how I got an idea or why I made something the way I did, we can talk about the metaphors of my life and how things like bipolar depression, religious convictions or leisurely passions have shaped my art. That discussion is very fulfilling. There are times however, when people just like the way a piece I made looks and I am glad that it can bring enjoyment with it’s physical merit alone.
